Minor Surgery

Many small surgical procedures can be carried out at the practice. These can include removal of lumps, cysts & smaller skin lesions and toenail surgery. Minor surgical procedures are carried out in our well equipped treatment rooms here at the practice. Equipment includes a modern autoclave to ensure sterility of equipment used for minor surgical procedures.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy involves using liquid nitrogen (cooled below -196°C!). This is applied to the skin in order to freeze superficial skin lesions including warts & verrucae. The treatment can be very effective. Please note that the treatment can briefly be uncomfortable and subsequently is not usually suitable for younger children.

Physiotherapy

The surgery currently contracts the services of a physiotherapist specifically to treat our patients. As a result our patients usually have a much shorter wait for physiotherapy than if we referred to one of the local hospital departments (although occasionally it may be necessary for patients to be referred to the hospital, for example if they have specialist physiotherapy requirements). The physiotherapist is at the surgery all day on Mondays and is based in the practice's Exercise Centre on the 2nd floor of the Kingsway Centre (accessed through the door adjacent to the main practice entrance).

Exercise Therapy

The practice opened a fully equipped gymnasium a few years ago utilising money saved through our high quality prescribing. The Exercise Centre is staffed by our exercise Therapist Lyn Johnson. As well as carrying out cardiac and respiratory rehabilitation programmes in conjunction with Swansea NHS Trust, we are able to offer a range of exercise therapy programmes to improve the health of many of our patients. These patients include those with diabetes, neurological conditions, cardiac conditions and high blood pressure, chronic respiratory illnesses, physical disability, obesity and chronic back pain.

Smoking Cessation Service

Stopping smoking is often the single biggest thing patients who smoke can do to improve their longterm health. At Kingsway Surgery we are able to support patients in giving up smoking. The first step is often to contact a service such as the All Wales Smoking Cessation Service on 0800 0852219 before discussing your needs with us here at the surgery. We currently have a Smoking Cessation clinic at the surgery on Fridays, run by a Smoking Cessation counsellor. Alternatively, you are welcome to discuss giving up smoking with any of the doctors or nurses.

Phlebotomy

A phlebotomist is a person specially trained to take blood. We have a phlebotomist at Kingsway Surgery on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Patients who have been asked to have blood tests should attend the surgery on these days from 9-10am. Patients will be allocated on a "first come, first served" basis. Patients are required to bring their blood request forms with them to enable the phlebotomist to perform the correct tests. Please remember to observe any special instructions relating to your blood tests such as for "Fasting" tests (nil to eat or drink except water from 9pm the evening before your test). Patients who are not able to (or prefer not to) attend the surgery for blood tests can have their blood taken by the Pathology Department at Singleton Hospital, Monday to Friday between 8.15am - 4.15pm; please note that at the hospital priority will be given in the morning to those having fasting blood tests.

Travel Vaccinations

Some of our practice nursing team are able to provide advice for those jetting off to far away shores. We are also able to administer appropriate vaccinations to those that need them (although please note we are not a registered Yellow Fever centre). Please note that many vaccinations recommended for overseas travel are not available on the NHS and you will be required to pay for these vaccines; some malaria treatments are available from pharmacies and your pharmacist may be able to advise & supply these where appropriate. It is imperative that you seek advice regarding travel vaccinations well in advance of your intended departure date (at least eight weeks) as they often need to be given well in advance of travel. Extensive advice is also available through the World Health Organisation's website.

Family Planning

The practice offers a range of family planning services. You can choose to discuss your contraceptive requirements with any of the doctors at the surgery or you can see one of our practice nurses (who can issue prescriptions for contraceptive pills). You can also attend the practice's Well Woman Clinic. The practice can also provide the contraceptive implant, Implanon, intrauterine devices/systems ("the coil") including Mirena and depot contraceptive injections where appropriate. We are also able to provide advice to those thinking of starting a family, including folic acid (ideally 3 months before trying to conceive) and smoking cessation advice. For those who feel that their family is complete we are happy to discuss male and female sterilisation options and to arrange appropriate referrals when needed.
